Enough Is Enough – Ato Forson Backs Gold Taskforce

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has strongly backed the formation of the newly inaugurated Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Taskforce, calling it a crucial step toward protecting the country’s mineral wealth and halting years of economic sabotage through unregulated gold exports.
Forson bemoaned the damage caused by illicit gold trade while speaking at the launch on Tuesday, July 8.
“This nation-wrecking act has gone on for far too long, and the consequences have been severe for the people of Ghana.
“That was nearly half of what Ghana was seeking from the International Monetary Fund as a bailout.
“Imagine if this $12 billion had translated into foreign exchange to support Ghana’s reserves. Our national currency would be far more stable today,” he stated.
The newly formed GoldBod Taskforce, comprised of personnel from the military, national security, and law enforcement agencies, has been tasked with monitoring and regulating gold exports, clamping down on illegal activities, and ensuring that the country reaps the full benefits of its mineral resources.
Dr. Forson described the initiative as “bold and timely,” noting that gold remains a major source of foreign exchange and must be properly accounted for to help stabilise the economy.
In a related development, the Finance Minister announced a significant breakthrough in Ghana’s economic recovery efforts.
He revealed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the country’s fourth review under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.
“The IMF Executive Board has just approved Ghana’s 4th Review under the ECF Programme, clearing the path for a substantial $370 million disbursement!” Dr. Forson wrote in a statement issued shortly after the announcement.
The disbursement, according to the Minister, provides renewed momentum to the government’s reform agenda and offers critical support for macroeconomic stability.
With the dual push from the GoldBod Taskforce and fresh IMF backing, the government appears poised to strengthen control over its resources while reinforcing its broader recovery programme.
“This is the moment to act decisively and protect what belongs to us,” Dr. Forson stressed, urging all stakeholders to rally behind the mission to reclaim Ghana’s economic future.
At this point, I can confidently state that Ato Forson is the most hardworking Minister in the vibrant Mahama administration.
I believe that if he continues on this path, the economy will recover and ultimately benefit us.
