Political Competition Must Not Cost Lives – Adutwum Warns

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has added his voice to the widespread condemnation of violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
The Bosomtwe MP and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful appealed for unity and accountability in the wake of the chaos held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
“I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people.
“Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life,” Dr. Adutwum stated. In a press release.
He condemned the attacks that left individuals, including former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist, injured, describing the violence as unacceptable in a democratic society.
“Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens,” he cautioned.
Calling for swift government intervention, Dr. Adutwum appealed to the Interior Minister to take immediate action.
“Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice,” he said.
He emphasized that holding those responsible accountable is essential to restoring public trust in Ghana’s democratic process.
“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he noted.
Dr. Adutwum concluded his statement with a call for unity and a return to civility in political engagement.
“Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.”
The police have launched a full scale investigation into the case, and we are hopeful that the offenders will be held accountable and face punishment.
I believe it is inappropriate for the NDC to complain about similar incidents that took place during the NPP era at Ayawaso West Wuogon and other ‘wild’ polling stations as a means to justify the events that occurred at Ablekuma North.
Wrong is wrong.
