Residents in parts of the Greater Accra Region will experience a scheduled power outage on Friday, July 18, as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertakes maintenance works to boost power reliability.

The affected communities include Sowutuom, Israel, Race Course, Shiabu, Beach Road, Gbawe Gonse, Joma Agbozome, Abease, Achiama, Obeyeyie, Ayikai Doblo, Fise Roca, Mericresent, Opah Township, Red Gate, and nearby areas. The exercise will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“ECG will undertake planned maintenance works to improve service delivery,” the company said in a public statement.

The utility provider explained that the outage is part of its broader effort to enhance service delivery and ensure stable power supply. ECG also issued an apology: “ECG regrets the inconvenience that will arise out of this exercise.”

In a related development, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has dismissed growing concerns that the government is planning to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), insisting that no such move is on the table.

“We are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is to involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection sector,” Mr. Jinapor said on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, during the Government Accountability Series forum in Accra.

He emphasized the administration’s focus on leveraging private expertise to improve revenue collection and operational efficiency in the power sector.

We have good Ghanaian entrepreneurs and businessmen. This is an opportunity for you. Get involved and help us bring about improvement in the sector,” he added.
