Maurice Ampaw Slams Kennedy Agyapong for Calling for Change at NPP Delegates Conference

Controversial Ghanaian legal practitioner turned television presenter Maurice Ampaw slammed New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong after making a sign for change during the party’s National Delegates Conference.
Speaking on Wontumi TV, Ampaw said Kennedy Agyapong’s gesture during that event was wrong.
“I was so disappointed when I saw Kennedy Agyapong. Change for what? I’m not against you, but that sign change, no. Are you changing the NDC or changing NPP? For what? You are in no position. So the change sign was wrong at that rally. It was wrong to do the sign of change. It was wrong. Because what are you changing?” he said.
Ampaw also argued that for the NPP to perform better in the 2028 elections, they needed to maintain former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in his position.
He said Bawumia had already performed in a national election and earned 41%; therefore, he needed only 9% in addition to move past the 50%+1 mark.
“We need to maintain, you need to be consistent. We need to maintain Bawumia. All the candidates up there, they have presidential ambition; they are all presidential material. We love all of you. But to get past 50%, [we need Bawumia,]” he concluded.
A former longtime Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who lost the 2024 NPP flagbearer race to Dr. Bawumia, has set his sights on unseating him this time at the party’s planned January 2026 elections.
Analysis of Maurice Ampaw’s criticism of Kennedy Agyapong
Maurice Ampaw’s attack on Kennedy Agyapong has to be analysed through the lens of the fact that he is an employee of Chairman Wontumi, one of the staunchest allies Dr Bawumia has in the NPP.
Ampaw may claim neutrality all he likes, but it’s very clear he is in the Bawumia camp.
It is rather silly to get upset at a politician for making a political gesture at a political rally, but Ampaw is being purposely negative here to score cheap political points against Agyapong.
The NPP’s flagbearer race is shaping up to be wildly exciting, and we are going to be ‘here for it’ all throughout!
