No More VIP Protection for Celebrities and Politicians – Muntaka Charges

Interior Minister Hon. Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has called on the Ghana Police Service to uphold neutrality and professionalism as the country moves toward the 2028 general elections.
Muntaka tressed the need for improved response systems and adherence to global best practices in law enforcement during a speech delivered at the 17th Regional Police Commanders Conference in Accra on Saturday
“I emphasized the need for the Ghana Police Service to operate with neutrality, professionalism, and enhanced rapid response capacity, especially as we head towards the 2028 elections,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
He urged the Service to adopt measures such as predictive policing through data and intelligence, a revival of community policing, special targeted operations, and the use of smart surveillance technologies.

He also highlighted the need to strengthen rapid response units to address growing security concerns.
“I asked for improved and rapid electoral preparedness and called for the adoption of international best practices to combat armed robbery,” Muntaka noted.
The Minister also issued a stern caution against the misuse of police officers for unauthorized protection duties, especially for celebrities, businesspeople, and political figures.
“I have directed the Inspector General of Police to audit all VIP protection arrangements and enforce strict compliance. Any breaches will attract sanction,” he warned.
In a major policy announcement, Muntaka revealed that the government of President John Dramani Mahama has allocated GHS 1 billion to retool Ghana’s security services, with the Police Service set to receive a significant portion of that funding.
He described the conference as “a crucial platform to review strategies and reassert the Police Service’s role in national security and development,” adding that this aligns with President Mahama’s broader Reset Agenda.
