The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has firmly denied reports suggesting that the government intends to repurpose the controversial National Cathedral site into a National Cultural Convention Centre

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the claim was based on an “unsolicited proposal” and stressed that “nothing of the sort has happened.”

“Let me clarify that, contrary to reports that emerged last week, the government has not decided to turn the site into a cultural convention centre; nothing of the sort has happened,” he said.

“It is merely an unsolicited proposal. The government has not engaged with it or taken any decision in that regard.”

The clarification comes in the wake of intense public debate about the fate of the halted National Cathedral project.

Kwakye Ofosu reiterated President Mahama’s unwavering stance on the matter, emphasizing that not a single cedi of public funds would be spent to revive the project.

“I can state with authority that as long as President Mahama remains the head of this country, he is unprepared to see even a pesewa of taxpayers’ money put into this National Cathedral project,” he stressed on Citi Breakfast Show

He added that the final decision regarding the site would be made once all relevant facts have been reviewed.

“As for what will be done to the site, that determination will be made after we have all the facts. But I can assure Ghanaians that no public fund will go into this cathedral,” he assured.

This follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent decision to dissolve the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral and shut down its Secretariat due to “damning audit findings.”

The announcement, made by Kwakye Ofosu during a press briefing on Friday, July 18, revealed that the Secretariat—previously located within the Jubilee House—was officially dissolved on May 1, 2025.

“The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds,” he noted.

He further indicated that legal proceedings will be pursued to ensure the full dissolution of the company behind the project, which was registered as a company limited by guarantee.
