Ayine Must Stop Misleading the Public – Godfred Dame Warns

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has taken a strong swipe at his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, over comments made at a recent press conference regarding the discontinued Unibank case.

In an open letter, Dame accused Dr. Ayine of deliberately misrepresenting facts to tarnish the image of the Office of the Attorney-General and justify his controversial nolle prosequi decision.

“The penchant of the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to peddle untruths in his press conferences is becoming quite alarming,” Dame wrote.

Reacting to Dr. Ayine’s claim that the Attorney-General’s office delayed for six months before filing witness statements in the Republic v. Ato Forson & Others trial, Dame dismissed it as “palpably false.”

“The accused persons were arraigned on 18th January 2022. By 14th February 2022—just 27 days later—all witness statements and relevant documents had been filed. Not six months, as wildly claimed,” he stated.

Dame said his office never once requested additional time to file any document in that case.

He questioned Dr. Ayine’s motives: “Is it sheer recklessness or a deliberate effort to make his predecessor and for that matter the Office he now heads, look bad?”

He further accused the current Attorney-General of abusing his prosecutorial powers to “free his former clients” through the discontinuation of the Unibank case.

“That is the first disclosure he should have made to the public at his press conference. Ghanaians deserve this basic courtesy,” Dame insisted.

Addressing claims of asset recovery made by Dr. Ayine, Dame argued they were disingenuous.

“All the assets of the Duffuors, Unibank, and related companies had already been identified by the Receivers appointed by the Bank of Ghana. Let him indicate which new assets he or his team discovered this year,” he challenged.

Analysis of Godfred Dame’s warning to the AG

From where I stand, it’s clear that the NPP is determined to find fault with every move the current government makes to ensure the smooth running of the country.

While it’s the opposition’s duty to hold the government accountable for the benefit of all, the NPP’s persistent objections—even in matters like the Attorney General’s anti-corruption efforts—raise suspicions.

Considering the scale of corruption that took place under their watch and the government’s resolve to prosecute those involved, Godfred Dame’s rebuttal appears to be nothing more than a distraction from the AG’s work.
