Sam George Hints at Major AirtelTigo Decision Within 30 Days

Sam Nartey George has given strong indications of imminent changes to the future of telecom company AirtelTigo.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation revealed that the state is currently in active discussions with the Attorney General’s Department to assess the financial health and viability of the struggling telecom operator when he took his turn to address the country on the Government Accountability Series.
“We’re working closely with the Attorney General’s Department to look at the financial viability of AirtelTigo,” he stated, hinting that a final decision will be made public within a month. “A national announcement will be made in the next 30 days,” he added.
This disclosure formed part of a broader conversation on Ghana’s aggressive digital transformation agenda.
Sam George also announced a massive tech skills development push, which will see over 5,000 Ghanaian youth trained in artificial intelligence within the next 18 months. This effort is being supported by tech giants such as Huawei, Google, MTN, and Telecel.
To further support local innovation, MTN Ghana has committed to a $25 million investment in an AI innovation centre at the Accra Digital Centre.
The initiative is expected to create employment, enhance capacity, and position Ghana as a leader in tech-driven development across the continent.
On the international front, the Minister revealed a major partnership with the United Arab Emirates for the establishment of a $1 billion Ghana-UAE Innovation Hub.
The facility, earmarked for launch in 2026, will be sited at Dawa in the Ningo-Prampram District—an area the Minister also represents in Parliament.
Capping off his address, Mr. George emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to building a digitally inclusive and secure economy.
He highlighted notable strides in regulatory improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and meaningful partnerships as hallmarks of the sector’s performance in the first half of 2025.
“Together, we are shaping a digital future that is equitable, resilient, and full of opportunities for all,” he said.
He concluded with a firm stance on cybersecurity, announcing that state agencies continue to work behind the scenes to dismantle criminal networks operating online.
“We are committed to clamping down on illegal activities in cyberspace,” he affirmed, commending the Cyber Security Authority and its partners for their diligence in tackling issues like human trafficking and financial fraud.
