People Prefer GHC1k Security Jobs Over GHC 5k Offers – Gbande

Mustapha Gbande has raised eyebrows over what he describes as a growing and puzzling trend—young people rejecting higher-paying private security jobs in favour of lower-paying roles with Ghana’s National Security.

The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency said the interest in National Security positions has spiked in recent years, with many applicants turning down well-paid opportunities elsewhere simply to be associated with the state intelligence agency in an interview on Adom FM.

“There is no problem anywhere, but when you want to work at SSNIT and the CEO is not ready to recruit people, what will you do?

Someone will come to you asking for a security job, and when you offer them one, they will insist on a National Security job,” he noted.

He disclosed that he is currently conducting research into the phenomenon and suspects the appeal has little to do with financial gain.

“I’m embarking on research to understand this, and I’m not done yet, but I believe it is wrong. People may have access to better-paying jobs but still prefer National Security roles,” he stated.

Gbande offered a striking example to support his point: “You can get someone a security job at AngloGold with a salary of GHC 3,000 to GHC 5,000, and they will still demand to work with National Security—even if they’ll be paid only GHC1,000.”

He suspects that the trend may be driven by other motivations.

“It appears some people just need the ID cards to pursue their own agenda. So, it is not about how lucrative the job is,” he added.

This is the first time I have heard something like this, but even if it is true, the reason is not far-fetched.

Being linked to the government in the role of National Security is a big achievement, as it provides avenues for opportunities within the government.

Therefore, Gbande is correct in stating that some individuals have their own agendas to follow, which leads them to reject offers from private companies in favour of remaining in National Security.
