Ghanaian lawyer and founder of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has described the size of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections as astonishing.

Otchere-Darko, in an interview with Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, said John Mahama winning the 2024 election was not a surprise to him because historically, it has been common for governments to lose power after a while.

He said the size of the NPP’s defeat truly surprised him because he was not expecting such a huge loss.

“First of all, NDC winning was not a surprise because historically, after a while, the country moves on and that sort of thing. And then, of course, there were a lot of challenges. But I think it was the size of the defeat rather than the size of the victory,” he said.

Otchere-Darko continued, “I think it was the size of the defeat that surprised me. I wasn’t surprised by the results John Mahama got, but I was surprised at the results the NPP got.”

The senior NPP figure was speaking up for the first time since the party’s massive 2024 election loss.

After eight years in office, the NPP was defeated in the 2024 elections by a significant margin, 56%-41% in the Presidential vote.

In the parliamentary poll, the NDC won a historic 183 seats to only 88 for the NPP with 4 Independent Members of Parliament.

Analysis

Gabby Otchere-Darko expressing surprise at the size of the NPP’s 2024 elections loss has to be the most surprising ‘surprise’ of the year, considering everyone knew a seismic defeat was coming.

It is difficult to imagine that anyone could underestimate the size of the loathing Ghanaians had developed for the NPP government and its leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, by the time the elections rolled around.

It appears the NPP themselves remained blind to their unpopular policies and the hardships they inflicted on Ghanaians, which explains why their loss blindsided them.

If they want to regain power, the NPP would have to get out of their echo chamber and regain some perspective about the lives of Ghanaians. Based on Gabby’s words here, they appear to be doing a poor job of that so far.
