Kofi Jumah, Former GIHOC Distilleries Boss Arrested
Former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has been arrested by a team of operatives from National Security.
Jumah’s arrest occurred late Sunday, June 29, 2025.
According to reports, National Security operatives besieged his residence and transported him to the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
Jumah faces allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety dating back to his beleaguered tenure leading the state distillery during the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
On May 15th, a team of National Security operatives stormed his residence in an operation to retrieve state vehicles that remained in his possession illegally.
Jumah was reportedly not home at the time, but later directed the return of one of the vehicles to state security.
Allegations against Maxwell Kofi Jumah
The former GIHOC boss allegedly purchased a Genesis G90 saloon car (registration number GE 86 22-19) at an estimated value of $100,000, for just 5% of its value—GHS 4,943.11.
The State Trasnport company later carried out an independent valuation of the vehicle and found it to be worth GHS 98,862.00.
At the time of Jumah’s purchase, the 2018 model vehicle had a mileage of 38,971 km and a seating capacity of five with key components such as the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, steering, and electrical systems all over in “good” condition, with no history of prior maintenance.
Jumah is also being investigated for allegedly retaining two additional official vehicles without formal approval from the Board, for inflating GIHOC staff numbers, and for selling company property worth nearly a million dollars without board approval.
Analysis
News of Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s arrest should surprise no one, considering GIHOC was regularly found to be one of the most mismanaged state-owned enterprises during the Akufo-Addo era—and that’s saying a lot, considering a lot of the rot we saw during that time.
His tenure was so bad it triggered President Mahama’s infamous rant wondering how anyone can lose money selling alcohol to Ghanaians.
To the extent that there are improprieties and financial irregularities from his reign, he needs to be truly held accountable, and it looks like that’s exactly what we’re getting here.
