Sammy Gyamfi Warns Gold Smugglers: “We Know You, and We’re Coming for You.”
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced the establishment of a new task force to arrest gold smugglers across the country.
Speaking during a press conference held on Monday, June 30, 2025, Gyamfi announced that President Mahama would be commissioning a new Goldbod task force that will be equipped with equivalent powers to the police service.
Their mandate would be to apprehend individuals who refuse to procure a licence from GoldBod and continue to trade gold illegally.
“For those who are hell-bent on trading illegally without alliances, we are serving notice that we are coming after you. On July 8, His Excellency, the President… will commission a very important unit of the Ghana Gold Board.” Gyamfi said.
He added that the event will be public and invited the media to come and witness it at the National Security Secretariat.
Gyamfi said the government has already gathered intelligence on gold smugglers and encouraged them to secure their licences before the task force is deployed.
He stated that once they start work, no one will be safe from their operations.
“This task force will be driven by the intelligence units that we have already deployed across the country, gathering information on the activities of all smugglers and illegal traders. We know you. You are not in hiding at all because your cover is blown. We know who you are.” Gyamfi continued.
“So you better do the needful and stop the illegal trading you’re engaging in and the gold smuggling and come for a licence and do your business as a responsible citizen and contribute to the development of our country as a whole,” he concluded.
Analysis of GoldBod task force
The GoldBod has so far executed its mandate flawlessly, massively increasing Ghana’s gold exports and, most importantly, the percentage of revenue that comes directly to the government and is not lost through smuggling and other illicit means.
The establishment of a task force seems like another masterstroke from the NDC government, which is handling the gold sector far better than its predecessors.
However, irrespective of GoldBod’s successes, the menace of illegal mining, or galamsey, continues to hang over the future of our country, and the government is not going to get full marks for their work in this sector until galamsey is controlled for good.
