Kennedy Agyapong Leads NPP Flagbearer Race, New Poll Finds

Published

on

The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has taken an early lead in the race for NPP flagbearer, according to a survey from a civil society group, Sanity Africa.

The poll found the firebrand politician, who is attempting to unseat former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer, has amassed the support of 51.4% of delegates.

Dr Bawumia was second in the poll with 42.2% support, followed by Abetifi MP, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, with 3.1% and former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, polling at 3.0% support.

The poll was conducted between April and June 2025 and is the first of three planned opinion surveys by Sanity Africa ahead of the NPP’s scheduled January 2026 flagbearer vote.

Deep dive

According to the data from Sanity Africa, Agyapong holds a strong lead across a varied section of demographics in the party, including women (57.8%), youth under 40 (63%), students (58.9%), the unemployed (52.8%), and self-employed individuals, including traders, market women, artisans, and farmers (55.5%).

Bawumia’s strengths lie among male delegates (48.9%), the employed (53.8%), and Muslim delegates (52.8%).

Overall, Kennedy Agyapong holds a lead in 10 out of 16 regions, with his best performances in the Central (68.1%), Western (59.5%), and Eastern (60.8%) regions.

Analysis of NPP flagbearer poll

A recent poll from Global Info Analytics gave Dr Bawumia a commanding lead in the NPP flagbearer race, making this new poll an interesting data point but not a be-all and end-all.

The race to be the NPP’s next leader is a heated one and will see more twists and turns until the elections are actually held.

Personally, I believe Kennedy Agyapong holds a slight lead, based on comments from NPP supporters, who seem intent on moving on from the Bawumia experiment.

Bawumia retains the support of much of the party establishment, though, putting him in good stead to keep the seat and head to the 2028 elections as the NPP’s standard bearer.
