Ghana Secures $30m Grant from China for Aflao Market
Ghana has received a $30 million grant from the Government of China to construct a modern market in Aflao, fulfilling a key promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 electioneering campaign.
The announcement was made by North Tongu MP and Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post sighted by Liberalprint.com.
“Ghana secures $30million grant from China. On the express instructions of President John Mahama, the funds will be used to construct a modern market in Aflao consistent with his promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign,” Ablakwa wrote.
According to him, the signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, with Ablakwa representing Ghana and Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signing on behalf of China.
“I signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa signed for the Chinese Government,” he stated.
Ablakwa also drew a connection to past developments under the Mills-Mahama administration, where a similar grant from China funded the now-celebrated Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast.
“A similar grant amount from China was used to construct the impressive Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama era,” he recalled.
The new Aflao market is expected to serve as a strategic commercial hub, linking economic activities across Ho and Lomé, while providing a major boost to local livelihoods in the Volta Region and beyond.
“The new befitting modern Aflao market is expected to boost economic activity, link the Ho and Lome markets and improve livelihoods in an enclave which is a major West African trading hub,” Ablakwa added.
He ended the statement with a note of patriotism: “For God and Country.“
Ablakwa is certainly among the most hardworking ministers in President Mahama’s administration.
Every action he takes justifies his leadership of the Foreign Ministry.
The Mahama administration has been open and has made us feel happy with our decision to vote for them.
The reset machinery is clearly operating at full capacity, backed by transparency and accountability.
Here’s what Ablakwa posted.
