Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has assured the public that justice will be served following the reported assault of a GHOne TV journalist by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

He revealed that the state had identified the officer involved and would not shield him from the consequences of his actions.

“We know where he is, we know where we can find him, and we can easily go after him. We are not going to allow this to go unpunished.

The law will have to take its course,” Muntaka stated firmly during an address delivered at the media at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 13

The assault occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the early stages of the rerun election.

According to eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media, the journalist identified as Kwabena Agyekum Banahene was being interrogated by a group of officers.

In the middle of the interaction, one officer unexpectedly stepped forward and violently slapped the reporter across the face without provocation.

The incident was captured on camera and shared by Adom 106.3 FM, sparking widespread condemnation from media advocates and the public alike.

The footage showed a visibly stunned journalist surrounded by officers, one of whom peeled away from the group to deliver the unprovoked attack.

Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who was reportedly present at the scene, immediately intervened and called for the replacement of the offending officer.

His swift action helped ease tensions at the polling centre.

Minister Muntaka used the platform to appeal for unity and peaceful coexistence, stressing that such acts of brutality undermine the democratic values the nation holds dear.

“We must all contribute our quota in ensuring that we live peacefully with each other regardless of gender, religion, ethnic origin, or economic or social status,” he urged.

This is news is refreshing. That policeman in question displayed a zero sense of professionalism.

The video showed no provocation at all, yet he struck the journalist who was simply performing his duties.

The officer, whose identity has been confirmed, has ruined his entire life due to that moment of insanity.

He deserves whatever consequences are headed his way.
