The chaos that occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling centre in Ablekuma North during the July 11 parliamentary rerun has attracted the attention of Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO, questioning the integrity of Ghana’s electoral security.

Despite a strong police presence, officers reportedly stood by as unidentified men stormed the centre, physically attacking key political figures and media personnel.

Among the victims were former MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, the NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, two journalists, and the NPP’s deputy national organiser, Chris Lloyd Asamoah.

In a statement released on Monday, July 14, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) described the conduct of the security personnel as a threat to Ghana’s democratic health and national stability.

“The security lapses observed during this election rerun—despite the visible police presence—raise very serious questions about the state of the Ghana Police Service,” the group said.

CODEO drew parallels between the rerun violence and similar lapses observed during the 2024 general elections and transition period, warning of a deteriorating trend.

“This posture of the police was observed during the 2024 elections and transition,” the coalition noted, further cautioning that the continued “emasculation” of the Ghana Police Service could have long-lasting consequences.

“The failure to act now could undermine Ghana’s young democracy and endanger future electoral processes,” CODEO warned.

The observer group called for immediate reforms and accountability to restore public confidence and ensure peaceful polls moving forward, especially ahead of the upcoming by-election in Akwatia.

This must be done urgently to ensure clear remedial actions are taken,” the statement emphasized.

Indeed, what happened at Ablekuma North could have escalated into a cold war had the thugs responsible for the chaos been identified by rival groups.

This must not be justified, as assertions from senior NDC members suggest it may be a likely response to similar offenses committed by the NPP during their time in power.

The police appeared defenseless amidst the turmoil, raising doubts about their credibility and professionalism.
