President Akufo-Addo denies accusations of attempting to delay NPP primaries

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has denied accusations that he’s behind a plot to delay the NPP’s upcoming National Delegates Conference and to delay the early Presidential primaries.

In a statement released on Monday, July 14, 2025 and through his office, Akufo-Addo categorically denied the claims which were made in publications on Ghanaweb.com and another news portal.

The former President had been accused of attempting to overturn the NPP’s decisions to hold its National Delegates Conference on July 19, followed by the unprecedented early Presidential flagbearer elections on January 31, 2026.

Akufo-Addo’s statement described the claims as ‘completely false’ and said he has been out of the country and not involved in any such decisions.

“The attention of this office has been drawn to two separate publications on Otecfmghana and Ghanaweb, alleging that former President Akufo-Addo sought to overturn the party’s decision on early primaries and to postpone the July 19 NPP National Delegates conference,” the statement began. “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state emphatically that these reports are completely false.”

The statement accused those involved in the publication of having their own agendas separate from that of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Analysis of Akufo-Addo’s denial of delaying NPP primaries

The NPP’s decision to hold early primaries in January 2026 – almost three years before the December 2028 elections – continues to stir controversy both within and without the party.

That’s because there is a clear agenda behind the decision, which is solely aimed at consolidating the power of those currently in charge without allowing time for them to be changed.

Logically, it follows that former President Akufo-Addo, who supports Bawumia and most of the current party executives, would stand behind their decisions.

One wonders if this statement has anything to do with the outburst by Kufuor over being sidelined from the party! We can easily imagine that one of the decisions he had no hand in but which Akufo-Addo probably endorsed was the decision to hold early primaries.
