We’re Not Selling ECG – Jinapor Finally Clears the Air

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has dismissed growing concerns that the government is planning to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), insisting that no such move is on the table.

“We are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is to involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection sector,” Mr. Jinapor said on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, during the Government Accountability Series forum in Accra.

He emphasized the administration’s focus on leveraging private expertise to improve revenue collection and operational efficiency in the power sector.

“We have good Ghanaian entrepreneurs and businessmen. This is an opportunity for you. Get involved and help us bring about improvement in the sector,” he added.

Jinapor reiterated a position he first shared in January 2025—that the government has no intention of privatizing ECG.

Rather, he explained, the goal is to make ECG more efficient by partnering with private firms in key areas such as billing and debt collection.

During a tour of the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) Tema Regulating and Metering Station, Mr. Jinapor again responded to public concerns, saying: “The assertion that we are selling ECG is not true.

ECG will not be sold, but we want some private sector participation to bring about a high level of efficiency, reduce the losses, increase the revenue base so that we can pay for some of these bills we are talking about.”

He also shed light on the financial pressure inefficiencies in ECG place on the government.

According to him, the Ministry of Finance should not have to divert taxpayer funds meant for infrastructure and social services to pay off debts owed to energy suppliers such as WAPCo and Nigerian Gas (N-Gas).

The Energy Mmaintained that reforms within ECG are essential, but they do not include outright sale of the company.

Instead, the focus remains on sustainable partnerships to strengthen the energy distribution chain and protect national interests.
