Akufo-Addo’s residence last made headlines in the aftermath of his 2016 election victory when traders and others operating in its vicinity were moved for security reasons.

At the time, reports claimed that the traders were only given a short period to vacate the area and without being given any compensation.

The former President’s spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid, released a statement to debunk the claims.

“In view of the security implications of the operations of the traders, and artisans, National Security proceeded to engage with them, and compensation packages of varied sums were agreed on. President Akufo-Addo has taken the view that the national purse should not be burdened on a matter such as this, and has gone on to pay these compensations from his personal resources,” the statement read at the time.
