Bawumia States ‘Secret Formula’ for NPP to Regain Power

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential aspirant, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the NPP will only return to power under one condition.

Speaking during the party’s National Delegates Conference over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia said unity is the key ingredient the NPP needs to regain the trust of Ghanaians and snatch power back from the hands of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.

He said if the party remained fractured and kept fighting one another, they would not be able to achieve that great objective.

“With unity and consistency, we can regain the trust of Ghanaians. If we are fractured and at each other’s throats, none of us can cross over and lead us to fulfil this party’s purpose,” Bawumia said.

The 2024 elections flagbearer, who has faced some charges of failing to win the election due to being Muslim, denounced that kind of campaigning as bigoted.

Bawumia also addressed charges that the NPP needs an Akan flagbearer to win over the party’s base.

“Let me say that tribalism and religious bigotry from whichever quarters it emanates pose an existential threat and should have no place in the New Patriotic Party,” he said.

“We must also be consistent in pursuance of our effort to address not just the challenges within, but more importantly, the challenges that bedevil our motherland. In governance, there are ups and downs,” Bawumia continued.

He argued that the party’s former Presidents, John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both attained monumental achievements in office that they can learn from.

“Through the president J.A Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo periods, we succeeded at many things with monumental and transformational achievements. Their achievements, these two great presidents, their achievements will stand the test of time,” he concluded.

Analysis of Bawumia’s prescription for NPP to return to power

The former Vice President is not wrong that the NPP needs to provide a unified front if they are to have any prayer at returning to office.

However, it sounds quite self-serving to make that point when the flagbearer race remains ahead of the party and he is seen as the frontrunner.

In this instance, his call might be interpreted as an attempt to clip the wings of his opponents before they even have a chance to challenge him.

Thankfully for all lovers of politics, Kennedy Agyapong definitely has no intention of unifying behind Bawumia; hence, we are going to enjoy a ‘showdown’ over the next six months until the flagbearer election in January, after which the calls for unity would be much better received.
