Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has praised the Ghana Armed Forces for their critical role in preserving the country’s environment and combating illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 21, 2025, Dr. Boamah credited recent forest recoveries and joint military operations as evidence of a determined national response.

“The Ghana Armed Forces have played significant supporting roles in the fight against illegal mining.

We have reviewed the fight against illegal mining and have worked with stakeholders to reform the fight. NAIMOS is a product of that review exercise,” he said, referring to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat.

He revealed that forest reserves once deemed inaccessible to forest guards have now been reclaimed, thanks to military leadership.

“The recovery of several forest reserves early this year which our forest guards could not venture was led by the Ghana Armed Forces. Additionally, the Navy supported land forces in operation Halt II along River Ankobra in the Western and Western North Regions,” Dr. Boamah explained.

While acknowledging the progress, he was quick to note that the fight is far from over.

“We are not out of the woods yet as a nation but there’s hope because there’s a political will at the very top,” he added.

Beyond environmental issues, Dr. Boamah also addressed national security, describing Ghana as ready for progress under the current leadership.

“Ghana is safe, peaceful, stable and ready for a reset agenda,” he said, warning that “criminals who want to foment troubles in the name of chieftaincy will be dealt with.”
