The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a series of emergency security measures following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase, at Asewase on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

The decision was made after an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, July 24, to assess the situation and take immediate action.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 25, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who chairs REGSEC, confirmed the new directives.

“The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge…on his untimely passing,” the statement noted.

Among the measures announced, motorbikes are banned from operating after 7:00pm until further notice.

The use of unlicensed motorbikes or those without lights is strictly prohibited.

REGSEC also suspended the ongoing inter-tribal football competition with immediate effect and placed a temporary ban on motorbike riders wearing smocks, citing security risks.

“No motorbike rider is permitted to wear a smock until further notice, as it has become an avenue for suspects to conceal weapons,” the council explained.

Security will be increased in identified hotspot areas, with police and military personnel deployed to protect lives and property.

REGSEC assured the public of the government’s commitment to law and order. “All necessary measures are being implemented to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice,” the statement read.

Citizens have been urged to support the investigations. “The doors of the Security Services remain open to receive credible information that can assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible,” the council stated.

REGSEC concluded by reaffirming its readiness to serve the public and uphold peace across the region.

Background details surrounding the incident indicate that Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbge, who served as the Kusasi Chief in the Ashanti Region and the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region, was gunned down by unknown assailants on Tuesday night at Asawase, a suburb of Kumasi.

Eyewitnesses report that the attackers, riding separate motorbikes, approached the chief and shot him at close range before fleeing the scene. His killing has intensified the security situation in the area and prompted swift government response.
