President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ghanaian music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The President described the late musician as a national treasure whose music touched lives across generations In a statement released shortly after the news broke in a Facebook post sighted by Liberalprint.

“I have learnt with deep sorrow the passing of Ghanaian music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.

“Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives, carrying us through various phases of life. The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages,” President Mahama stated.

He extended his condolences on behalf of the state: “On behalf of the Government of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones for this irreplaceable loss.”

In a related tribute, NPP stalwart Sammi Awuku also reflected on the personal impact of Daddy Lumba’s music, particularly his favourite track, “Ankwanoma.”

“I never imagined the day would come when the very song that gave me strength would echo with finality,” Awuku wrote.

“Ankwanoma,” my favourite song. A song that taught me that life is simply borrowed time, that we do what we can, and when our moment comes, we simply exit without saying goodbye.”

His message continued with an emotional note on the connection between the lyrics and the man who sang them.

“Today, that truth has unfolded in the life of the one who sang it so beautifully. I never imagined that soon the voice behind that wisdom would one day become the very proof of it.

Daddy Lumba sang what many of us didn’t have the words to say. He wrapped life’s deepest truths in melody, and now, just as he sang, his time came, and he’s gone.”

Awuku concluded by stating, “Life, indeed, is fleeting. But some souls live on through the songs they leave behind, and DL will always be that legend. Rest In Peace, DL. You impacted through songs.”

Daddy Lumba’s music career began at the young age of 16, during his time at Juaben Senior High School.

He led the school choir between 1983 and 1984 under the guidance of music teacher Christabel and completed his studies in 1985.

While at Juaben SHS, he formed the Lumba Brothers group with his friends Yaw, Kwabena, and his girlfriend Theresa Abebrese — a formation that laid the foundation for what would become one of Ghana’s most celebrated musical journeys.
