NPP Opens Nominations, Announces Fees for 2026 Presidential Primary
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the opening of nominations for its 2028 elections Presidential primary.
Party General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced the information at a press conference held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
“Nominations for our party members who aspire to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections have been opened. However, there are some guidelines that I need to bring to your attention,” he said.
According to the party scribe, presidential nominees are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of GHS 100,000 and a filing fee of GHS 500,000.
He added that nominations close on August 28, 2025, with elections set for January 31, 2026.
The NPP is moving forward with plans for a speedy flagbearer race to be held three clear years before the next Presidential election.
Meanwhile, a new Global Info Analytics Survey has former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a commanding lead in Assin Central, his main rival Kennedy Agyapong’s former constituency.
Despite holding the seat for the NPP for over two decades, Agyapong is reportedly trailing heavily to Bawumia in the constituency.
The poll found 68.5% of respondents in Assin Central voting for Bawumia, while 30.1% voted for Kennedy Agyapong.
The results of the survey have fuelled the momentum of the former VEEP who is seeking to represent the NPP for the second time in a row.
According to Global Info Analytics, Bawumia also holds leads in key constituencies in the region such as Mfantseman, Ekumfi, Upper Denkyira West, Cape Coast, and Agona.
Analysis of NPP’s Presidential primary nominations
The NPP continues to barrel forward with plans for an early primary despite complaints from some party rank and file that they are not happy with the decision.
Based on the findings from Global Info Analytics, the plan seems to be working well as Bawumia retains a significant lead over his rival, Agyapong.
It takes time to campaign and change hearts and minds; however, it seems the NPP are going to give Kennedy as little time as possible to change the reality on the ground.
With the way things are headed, we think it’s inevitable that Dr Bawumia gets reelected as the NPP’s flagbearer in January unless Agyapong pulls off some miracle.
