Court Hands Airport Lands Back to GACL in Major Win Over McDan Group

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reclaimed more than 16 acres of prime airport land following a decisive Accra High Court ruling in its favour against subsidiaries of the McDan Group.
In its judgment on May 6, 2025, the court granted GACL full possession of two parcels of land — approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres — near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International.
These lands were leased in 2012 to McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited.
The decision followed GACL’s legal action in February 2025, in which the company cited repeated breaches of lease agreements and non-payment of ground rent.
GACL sought to recover $26,296 in arrears and requested a perpetual injunction to stop the companies from interfering with the land.
The court upheld GACL’s case, ruling that the McDan subsidiaries had no valid defence. It granted summary judgment and awarded GH¢50,000 in legal costs to GACL.
Describing the verdict as a major step in protecting state assets, GACL commended its Legal
Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, for their work in pursuing the case.
“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property,” the company stated.
This ruling comes months after McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended in December 2024 over unresolved debt obligations.
Though those debts were later settled, the land issue remained outstanding until the court’s intervention.
Meanwhile, fresh controversy has emerged after a warehouse worker reported a tense encounter with men believed to be national security operatives who demolished a structure allegedly owned by McDan.
While the motive behind the demolition remains unclear, the incident adds to the recent troubles surrounding the businessman’s operations.
