GES Shuts Down Three SHSs in Upper East Amid Violent Clashes

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the temporary closure of three Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region following a wave of violence that has disrupted academic activity, left students injured, and claimed lives.
The affected schools — Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS — experienced separate violent disturbances between July 20 and 26, 2025.
The GES, in a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, described the incidents as “deeply disturbing” and extended condolences to bereaved families and the wider school communities.
“The GES condemns in no uncertain terms these acts of violence,” the statement read. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire school communities. We stand with them in this difficult moment and assure them of our full support.”
In an effort to protect students and prevent further damage, authorities swiftly evacuated learners from the affected campuses.
The GES commended the Ministry of the Interior and security forces for their rapid response, assuring the public of continued collaboration with relevant agencies to restore calm and safety.
Meanwhile, attention has turned to the fate of final-year students scheduled to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The GES says it is working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and other stakeholders to establish alternative, secure examination centres for SHS 3 students so they can write their papers without risk.
For students in SHS 1 and 2, the service announced plans to roll out remote and alternative learning options while schools remain shut. Details of these arrangements are expected to be communicated in the coming days.
Recognising the emotional toll on students, staff, and parents, the GES urged community leaders, parents, and law enforcement to rally around efforts to restore peace and uphold discipline in educational institutions.
