The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ablekuma North election rerun, the Electoral Commission has declared.

Ewurabena Aubynn, who represented the party, was declared to have polled 34,090 votes across all 281 polling stations in the constituency, including the 19 where a rerun was held.

The NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes. Total votes cast were 68,382, with 411 ballots rejected.

The rerun was necessitated by the failure of the Electoral Commission to collate all results from the constituency. After deciding to hold a rerun in the 19 polling stations with missing pink sheets, the NPP launched a legal challenge which was dismissed, paving the way for the polls.

The NPP initially decided to boycott the polls but eventually decided against it. Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong forcefully spoke up against the decision.

The NDC’s hard-fought victory followed a rerun that was marred by violence, particularly at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, where former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament Hawa Koomson was assaulted.

In light of the victory, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a parliamentary supermajority, with their 184 seats a two-thirds majority of the house.

Gov’t condemns election violence

In a statement, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, denounced violence that erupted during the polls.

“We do not in any way, shape or form, condone the mistreatment of journalists, and all other incidences will be looked into with the view to seeking redress for the victims.” Kwakye Ofosu said.

Analysis of the NDC’s victory in Ablekuma North

The NDC has secured a historic win, the first it has managed in the Ablekuma North constituency since its formation.

The victory mirrors similar victories they secured during the 2024 elections, winning seats across the length and breadth of the country that they had previously never won.

Ablekuma North tells us the NDC continues to enjoy massive goodwill from Ghanaians and that the NPP have their work cut out for them if they are to make a return into the good graces of the people.
