Perpetrators of Violence in Ablekuma North will Face Justice unless they Flee the Country – Interior Minister
The Minister of Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mubarak, has vowed that those involved in violence during the Ablekuma North election rerun would be punished severely.
Speaking during a press engagement on Monday, July 14th, 2025, the Asawase MP expressed full confidence in the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and his team to bring the alleged perpetrators to justice.
“Whoever commits this thing, they vanish from the system, but we have to take time to track them. But be assured that we are not going to allow this to go unpunished unless they flee the country,” he said.
“So long as they’re around, they should be rest assured that we will have the law take its course. Because we cannot allow this to happen in our country,” he continued. “And you can be rest assured that I trust in the professionalism of the IGP and his team.”
Muntaka also said there are plans underway to set up a police commission to help promote public confidence in the institution.
“In the next six months, we will start work on an independent police complaint commission, which will be responsible for promoting confidence in the general public, investigate serious incidents, setting standards, operating independently of the police administration among others, just to give our citizens the hope and belief that if a police officer misbehaves, he or she will surely be brought to book,” he said.
Analysis of Muntaka’s statement on Ablekuma North violence
It’s vitally important that the Interior Minister made his pronouncement about the perpetrators of violence in Ablekuma North being brought to book.
However, actions speak louder than words, and it’s the prosecutions of the thugs going forward that will determine if the government is being serious about fighting the violence.
We have other elections ahead of us, and if nothing happens to punish those involved in the Ablekuma North violence, there is likely to be even worse violence in Akwatia and in other elections going forward.
