Don’t Take Her Number – Bagbin Warns Male MPs Over Newly Sworn-in MP Ewurabena Aubynn

Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin caused laughter — and sent a stern reminder — during the swearing-in of the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

In a lighthearted but pointed moment on the chamber floor, Bagbin jokingly cautioned male MPs who appeared overly interested in the new legislator.

“This House is now blessed with the final member — a female — now increasing the number to 41 female members in the House. If this is not a blessing, what else?

And I saw some of you taking her telephone number… Please, Honourable Members, she is not in the market. She is not in the market, so please, don’t attempt.”

Beyond the humour, Bagbin used the occasion to offer guidance to the first-time lawmaker.

“I will take this opportunity to congratulate you and also urge you to be punctual, ever present in Parliament, be calm, listen more, learn from your colleagues, but please read everything, and not only the Constitution and the Standing Orders.”

He urged Aubynn to honour the faith placed in her by the people of Ablekuma North:
“You are now the hope of the people in the constituency.

They are looking up to you to do something to improve their lives. It is a trust, and this I pray you don’t abuse.

Four years is just a day. You will go back to them, and they will assess you this time based on your performance. So please don’t be misled by other people.”

The ceremony was not without controversy, as members of the Minority Caucus walked out in protest after the Speaker denied Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s request to make a statement ahead of the swearing-in.

Aubynn’s path to Parliament followed a rerun of the December 2024 election in 19 polling stations, which the Electoral Commission annulled due to reports of irregularities and unauthenticated pink sheets.

In the closely fought July 11 rerun, she secured 34,090 votes to edge out NPP’s Akua Afriyie, who received 33,881 votes — flipping a traditionally stronghold seat for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

It’s rather unfortunate that the Minority chose to walk out.

They must come to terms with the fact that the election was fair, and they were soundly defeated—even in what they consider their stronghold, despite a few isolated incidents.

It’s time they faced the reality of their declining influence and focused on putting their house in order, rather than resorting to such frivolous actions to stay relevant.
